Healthy & Easy Mom Hair

Assess your current hair situation! Seriously, how many hours a week do you spend washing, drying, treating, style, etc??

If you’re looking to add some more hours to your life, this is the perfect place to start!!

BONUS, we can save some money as well as time here! Check it out:
Washing, draying, styling your hair (from my small survey) can take on average anywhere from 20 min to 1 hour.
Sometimes… Well, often, I don’t have 20 minutes to myself in the morning, much less an hour. This morning for example was a particularly rough one.

Our power went out around 1:24AM which woke my 2 girls up. They didn’t just wake up and ask “why is it so dark?”, they started screaming as if they were on fire. I honestly thought something was seriously wrong.
I hit the light and when it didn’t turn on I thought “oh weird the power is out” but their screams were so much worse than they should have been at it just being DARK in the MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT I was sure something much more nefarious was going on.
NOPE.
Just dark.
The next 5 hours were broken up every 30-60 minutes by a child either coming into my room asking if the power was going to go out again, or one of them knocking on the wall that our bedrooms share so I would knock back assuring them that I was in fact still in the house.
I did think about going to sleep in the car but being woken up every 45 minutes was just as bad as being in a freezing vehicle.

I digress… my hair.
This morning was a particularly rough one. No time what-so-ever for a wash, dry and style (not that I really style mine, occasionally I’ll straighten it). So! How did I show up to work not looking like a disheveled mom who only got a combined 2.5 hours of sleep?
Dry Shampoo.
And a little ‘hair training’.

I used to teach Zumba and work out at least once a day and during that time in my life, washing my hair more than once a day wouldn’t have been out of the ordinary.
I do think back to those days, before kids, when I thought I really was busy, and think of all the time I had. And no, I wasn’t styling my hair most of the time. It was just up in a messy bun or down in a braid. But still, that’s HOURS I could have had for other things.

A little older now, a little wiser, I’ve learned from my past and I make better choices now.

FIRST: Stop washing your hair every day. Take baby steps. Even if you push it from every day to every-other-day, you’re still saving hours a week! Skip a day that you don’t have much going on to test out the waters.
SECOND: Get a thick headband, head scarf, and DRY SHAMPOO. But not any dry shampoo, a good one that doesn’t have a handful of carcinogens in it (cancer causing chemicals, yuck!)
My favorite is Just Ingredients.
Yes, it is more expensive than something from Target but it is so worth it. The smell is amazing. It doesn’t cake up or leave white streaks. And it lasts forever! Especially once your hair is ‘trained’ to not get so oily.

When you wash your hair daily you strip away the nutrients from your scalp. When you live in the Northeast like me, your skin (including your scalp) are already fighting a losing battle for months out of the year. Help your scalp by leaving those nutrients intact and investing in a good quality dry shampoo.

When it comes down to it, this is really just a shift in your hair care routine, nothing crazy new. There are so many small shifts we can make over the course of our day to save time, money, be healthier, create more joy, and just be more present with our loved ones.
