Cough Cough

Don't get me wrong, I really do love the holiday season!! It just comes with some unwanted extras sometimes... could be relatives you enjoy living far away from... could be the unwanted germs that they bring.
I LOVE having essential oils on hand to tackle and prevent seasonal colds. You can’t prevent everything, but I do find if I get on it right away, they clear up much quicker.
Some oils are especially good for certain types of coughs.

The Barking Cough.
If you’re a parent, you’ve probably heard this and even reading the descriptive name makes your heart sink. It’s scary if I’m being honest. When I was younger, my little brother always seemed to come down with this. There are some things you can do to avoid that midnight ER run, but sometimes you can’t. If it’s your first time dealing with it and especially if you have a tiny baby, go see a doctor right away. If you are a little seasoned in dealing with it, here are some at home remedies that we’ve had success with.

Sitting outside in the cold. Think of the cold air as an ice pack on a bump. The barking noise comes from inflamed airways and the cold air acts like an ice pack, soothing and calming the inflammation. Wrap your little one (and you) in blankets and head outside to the porch.

Cold liquid. Same reason as the cold air. Also, avoiding dairy helps because dairy is inflammatory, but this is tough with little ones who need that bottle to soothe. Depending on their age, this might be a good time to put some water in their favorite bottle.

Humidifier & Diffuser. Cool mist humidifiers are a must have! We run ours every night during the wintertime… and when the A/C is on in the summertime! I LOVE the Dawn Humidifier/Diffuser from doTERRA. It lasts all night and is super easy to clean. My absolute least favorite part of humidifiers is cleaning them BUT it is so important to keep them clean. You don’t want to be misting mold back into the air when your initial intention is to make the air better suited to breathe. I wouldn’t add essential oils to a humidifier that isn’t designed for them. There’s no rule against having a diffuser running right beside a humidifier though. Add Thyme, Tea Tree, and Marjoram essential oils to help with the barking cough.

The amazing thing about essential oils is there are many different options. If you only have 2 of the 3 listed, no problem! Use what you have. You can also reach out to me for a list of substitutes. The oils listed can be put into a diffuser or into a roller bottle with fractionated coconut oil and applied topically to the chest, bottom of feet or back between the shoulder blades.

Don't have any essential oils?? We can fix that, but in the meantime boil some filtered water for tea.
~Wash an organic lemon really well then use a peeler to add some of the rind to your water. (Lemon essential oil comes from the rind) This will help break up congestion.
~Add a stick of cinnamon. It has anti-viral, anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties and contains antioxidants with anti-inflammatory effects!
~If you have Chamomile tea, add that for calming properties.
  • For adults, hold the cup close to your face, close your eyes and breathe in and out slowly. Sip it when it cools down a bit.
  • For kids, keep the cup at arms distance. We don’t want any accidents. If you can smell it from arms distance away, so can they.

When buying essential oils, I usually opt for Cassia over Cinnamon Bark. It's much more cost effective, has a sweeter aroma/taste, and isn't as potent in tea. For the highest quality oils, always stick with doTERRA
